Welcome to the Momenta Learning News on Machine Learning. This is issue 82, please feel free to share this post.
Excerpt of article published on IDG Connect. Machine learning (ML) is getting a lot of attention at the moment. This is partly because a slew of new companies are emerging which are using it in innovative ways. And partly because it can get easily subsumed into the fuss and furore about AI and the rise of evil robot intelligence.

Since presidential campaigns have incorporated social media into their strategic messaging, it has become more challenging for journalists to cover the election in depth, because of the large amount of data generated by candidates and the public every day.

In recent months, artificial intelligence (AI) has been making its presence known in different fields of sciences. In fact, AI is deemed as a valuable asset in precision medicine. But now, a team of researchers is exploring the possibilities if machine learning could play a vital part in autism screening, diagnostics and intervention.

Scientists are hoping to use Big Data and machine learning to prevent further outbreaks of Ebola, by identifying the likelihood of various bat species carrying the virus. Ebola is what’s known as a filovirus, which are long filament-shaped viruses whose genome is encoded on a single strand of RNA.

Machine learning is in the applications we use daily. Netflix uses it to recommend movies, Facebook to tag our friends in photos, and Google and Microsoft to automatically deposit unwanted email in the junk folder. The term describes methods for using statistical models, real-time analysis and algorithms to find patterns in data and deliver instant recommendations.

Artificial intelligence these days is mostly powered by neural networks and machine learning, allowing its capabilities to be greatly expanded in a very rapid fashion, mostly by guiding an AI in what to learn, and letting it learn. One area where AI programs generally have trouble learning because of common factors being somewhat scarce on a specific level is human interaction.

A big benefit of using the Weka platform is the large number of supported machine learning algorithms. The more algorithms that you can try on your problem the more you will learn about your problem and likely closer you will get to discovering the one or few algorithms that perform best.

In this work, we explore theoretical properties of simple non-convex optimization methods for problems that feature prominently in several important areas such as recommendation systems, compressive sensing, computer vision etc. Talks: Provable Non-convex Optimization for Machine Learning. Summer School on Non-convex Optimization, IIT Bombay, 2015.

Machine learning technology is poised to move from niche data analytics applications to mainstream enterprise big data campaigns over the next two years, a recent vendor survey suggests. SoftServe, a software and application development specialist based in Austin, Texas, reports that 62 percent of the medium and large organizations it polled in April said they expect to roll out machine learning tools for business analytics by 2018.
